On August 24th, 2021, Alteriq Pleasant was arrested for a misdemeanor after playing his music on the subway. But what happened next was truly disturbing. He was tackled by police officers so hard that his girlfriend thought he was dead because he wasn’t moving. And to make matters worse, the police then charged him with battery of a peace officer and public noise device (speaker).
Despite the unjust treatment he received, Alteriq Pleasant fought the case with a Judge’s vocal support. He was pursuing that case against the Chicago Police Officers at District 1, located at 1710 S. State Street in Chicago Illinois and winning with a scheduled court date of July 26th, 2022, to conclude.
However, the story takes a tragic turn. The officers who were involved in his arrest found him a year later, which culminated in his arrest once again. And this time, it led to his death in custody. It's hard to imagine the pain and suffering he went through during his final moments.
This incident highlights the systemic issues that continue to plague our society. It’s heartbreaking to see innocent individuals lose their lives due to the injustice they face. The fact that Alteriq Pleasant was tackled and then charged with battery of a peace officer is a clear indication of how little regard some law enforcement officials have for the people they are meant to protect.
It's important that we don't turn a blind eye to cases like this. We must hold law enforcement officials accountable for their actions and work towards creating a more just and equal society. Alteriq Pleasant's death should serve as a wake-up call to all of us to stand up against injustice and work towards a better future.
